Checklist of the Birds of New Zealand

© Matthias Dehling, New Zealand Birds Online (Great spotted kiwi Apteryx maxima)

The aim of this sixth checklist of New Zealand birds, like its predecessors, is to provide information on the nomenclature, taxonomy, classification, distribution (current, historical, and fossil) and status of the birds of the New Zealand region. As with earlier editions, it was produced by a Checklist Committee of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand Inc. (OSNZ).

The five earlier versions of the checklist of New Zealand birds published by the Checklist Committee of the Ornithological Society of New Zealand may be downloaded here:

In addition, ‘Amendments and additions to the 1970 Annotated Checklist of the Birds of New Zealand’ was published as a supplement to Notornis Vol. 27 (1980).
